Metung is a picturesque village nestled on the shores of the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria, Australia. The town boasts a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century when it was discovered by European explorers. Over time, the town has transformed into a popular tourist destination, attracting thousands of visitors each year due to its scenic beauty, tranquil atmosphere and colorful past.

Before the arrival of Europeans, Metung was an important site for the Gunaikurnai people who lived in the area. They used the plentiful resources found in the lakes, estuaries and forests to create a vibrant community. For hundreds of years, their ancestors fished, hunted, traded and socialized on the land that now forms Metung.

The first European to discover the Gippsland Lakes was explorer George Bass, who sailed into the area in 1798. However, it was not until the 1830s that white settlers began to arrive in the region, attracted by the promise of fertile lands and abundant timber. The settlement of Metung was founded in the 1840s, with the first European homestead built by the Sutherland family in 1842. The name Metung was derived from an Aboriginal word meaning 'plenty of fish' or 'rich in fish'.

The town quickly grew as more settlers arrived, attracted by the resources of the area. The Gippsland Lakes became an important hub for shipping, with goods transported by boat to and from Melbourne. Early industries included fishing, timber cutting, farming and gold prospecting. The town also had a post office, a school and a church. By the 1860s, the population of Metung was over 200, making it one of the largest towns in the area.

Over the next few decades, Metung underwent significant changes. The arrival of the railway in nearby Bairnsdale in the 1880s saw the decline of the town's shipping industry, as goods could now be transported more easily by train. Many of the town's residents moved away, leaving behind a small but resilient community who reinvented Metung as a holiday destination. The town's idyllic location, surrounded by water and forests, made it a perfect place for relaxation and recreation.

By the early 1900s, Metung had become a popular holiday spot for Melbourne's elite. Wealthy families built holiday homes along the foreshore, creating a sense of exclusivity and luxury. Many of these homes still stand today and are an important part of the town's heritage. In the 1920s and 1930s, Metung attracted a different kind of tourist - artists and writers who were drawn to the area's natural beauty and bohemian atmosphere. Among the visitors were well-known figures such as Norman Lindsay and Arthur Streeton, who painted and wrote about the landscape and people of Metung.

During World War II, Metung played an important role in Australia's defence. The town was used as a training base for commandos and special forces who were preparing for missions in the Pacific. The local pub, the Metung Hotel, was used as a meeting place for intelligence officers and soldiers who were planning secret missions.

In the post-war years, Metung once again became a popular holiday destination for families. The town's untamed beauty and relaxed lifestyle appealed to those who were looking for an escape from the stresses of modern life. The establishment of the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park in the 1990s cemented Metung's reputation as a place of natural beauty and ecological significance. Today, the town is a thriving tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world who come to swim, sail, walk, fish and explore the rugged and unspoilt landscape.

Metung's unique history has left an indelible mark on the town. Its rich cultural heritage, combined with its stunning natural surroundings, make it a place of great significance for both locals and visitors. As the town continues to grow and evolve, it remains true to its roots, embracing its past while looking towards the future.
